What to Expect
Hi and welcome to the Canyon View church of Christ website.
We are a church family that believes in the power of Christ working through
ordinary people accomplishing the extraordinary. We have a simple faith and
seek the simple truths of the Bible and call ourselves, simply, Christians.
We are lovers of the Word of God and do our best to model our lives after
the Word Himself, Christ our Savior.
Were you searching for us purposefully, or have you just stumbled across
us? Whatever the case, we’re thankful for God’s providence in
bringing you our way. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with this
site and with all that the Lord is accomplishing in our congregation, and
know that we’d love to meet you some day.
What can I expect?
When you come to worship with us, expect to see reverence in action.
We believe that Christ and his apostles did a great job in modeling what “church” should
look like, and we do our best to model the forms we find in the New Testament.
So that may look a little different than what you may be used to if you
were raised in “church.”
On a typical Sunday morning you can expect to be greeted at the door and
welcomed into our Sunday morning worship services at 10:00AM and our Bible
classes at 9:00AM. Our worship service typically lasts for about one hour.
In this time you be able to sing a blend of new contemporary songs with good
classic hymns. You’ll be brought the Word of God through
readings prayers and a sermon, and you’ll have an opportunity every
week to commune with God and the church in our communion service.
For our families we offer many special programs to encourage spiritual growth
and development in all ages with Bible classes for kids at 9AM and a special
children’s worship time that is concurrent with our Sunday morning
sermon. There is also a nursing room, a children’s training room and
a monitored nursery available during our Sunday morning worship hour. For
those who are deaf, we also offer interpreters in all of our Bible classes
and worship times.
What should I wear?
We don’t have a dress code during our worship times, but
most like to dress their best for their worship. Although you’d feel
comfortable in California Casual too. We know that worship is all about
what is coming from your heart.
What’s the CV story?
Canyon View church of Christ came into existence about 10 years
ago when the Clairemont church came together with the Pacific Beach church.
This was a wonderful example of the unity that Christ wanted his followers
to model. Since then our family at Canyon View has grown steadily as new
Christians are added to God’s family on almost a daily basis. We
are passionate about the Great Commission mentioned in the Gospel of Matthew,
calling Christians to go out and make disciples of all people by baptizing
them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and teaching them how
to obey the words of Christ.
We have a vision to reach the many in San Diego and abroad who don’t
yet know of Christ’s love. We accomplish our task through God’s
power and the work of many different ministry teams in our congregation.
I have heard different things about the church of Christ.
In our efforts to model the first-century church, we may look
very different than many other non-denominational churches. The most noticeable
difference is that we worship together without musical instruments! We
feel that this encourages everybody to be active in participatory worship.
There’s no watching a praise team or a soloist here, for everybody
is shouting praises to God. If you have never heard four-part harmony in
congregational worship, you will be amazed.
If you come to worship with us, you’ll most likely get to witness somebody
coming to Christ. We believe that a relationship with Christ starts when
a person realizes that he/she is a sinner and that Christ has died for those
sins. We also believe that baptism in its New Testament form is crucial to
1)obey the example of Christ (Mark 16:16), 2) in obedience receive the grace
of God and the freedom from sin (Acts 22:16), and 3) receive the Holy Spirit
who helps us grow to be more like Christ every day (Acts 2:38-39). Many other
non-denominational Christian churches practice some form of baptism, but
most likely not for these reasons.
Chances are you may have been approached by someone on the street who has
invited you to come to church service with them. You may have heard them
mention the San Diego Church of Christ/International Church of Christ, or
you may have seen the news coverage on this pseudo-cult. Although this group
of over zealous Christians share some similar beliefs, and even the same
name we do not live out our faith in the same ways. Through God’s power
and our common backgrounds we have actually been able to help many to leave
this pseudo-cultic movement and find the grace and peace that come from a
relationship with Christ based on our faith and not our deeds.
